Kostenpunkt: ein paar Soles im Gegensatz zu den mittlerweile über 100 USD für das Touristenzugticket. In Aguas Calientes ist dann lediglich der Eintritt in den Machu-Picchu-Nationalpark von 20 USD (2006) zu bezahlen. Die Tour kann von Santa Maria aus noch um eine Tour in die Selvastadt Quillabamba verlängert werden, wo man Unterkünfte am Plaza findet. Eckdaten der Tour: Cuzco - Santa Maria (Bus 6-8 h) - Santa Theresa (Bus 3 h, hier gibt es Campingplätze) - Seilbahn, anschließend nach rechts bis zur Brücke laufen, dort gibt es ein E-Werk und die Bahngleise entlang nach Aguas Calientes. Von dort sind es noch 2.5 h zu Fuß nach Machu Picchu. Auf dieser alternativen Route zum Machu Picchu trifft man viele Low-Budget-Traveller v. a. aus Lateinamerika (sehr viele Argentinos). Ein Highlight auf jeder Reise.

Achtung: Es handelt sich hierbei nicht um den Versuch, den Inca-Trail verbotenerweise ohne Führer zu machen.
